Spain Declares Three Days of Mourning After Deadly Train Collision Kills 69
Spain has commenced three days of national mourning following a high-speed train collision in the central region of Castilla La Mancha that left 69 people dead and 50 others hospitalized. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning near the village of Urda on a major rail line connecting Madrid and Seville, when a train operated by state company Renfe struck the rear of a stationary train owned by private operator Iryo.
At midday on Thursday, a minute of silence was observed nationwide, with lawmakers gathering outside Parliament while rail workers and union officials paid tribute at Madrid's main railway station. Public buildings flew flags at half-mast, and official events across the country were cancelled or reduced in scope. Emergency crews worked through the night using heavy equipment, sniffer dogs, and thermal drones to search the wreckage for victims, while a local school in Urda was established as a temporary support centre for relatives awaiting news.
Investigation and Safety Questions Surround Crash Cause
Transport Minister Oscar Puente stated that an automatic control system had previously shut down across 69 kilometres of track, prompting an initial stoppage of all trains on that section. According to Puente, the control centre subsequently decided to resume traffic under what he described as inexplicable circumstances. The Renfe train travelled 25 kilometres before colliding with the stopped Iryo train. Puente noted that the control centre had sufficient time to identify the system error without resolving it, though his comments regarding individual controller responsibility drew criticism from union leaders.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the crash site and pledged a thorough investigation to determine the precise circumstances of the disaster and enhance railway safety measures. The tragedy marks the second major high-speed rail collision in Spain this year, following a January incident in Andalusia where a derailment caused a collision that killed 46 people. Railway workers carried out a pre-planned strike on Thursday to demand safety enhancements, pointing to system-level vulnerabilities on the network.
