World Cruise Suspends Voyage in Cambodia Amid Rising Fuel Costs
A U.S.-based luxury cruise ship on a continuous multi-year voyage around the globe has suspended its operations, leaving passengers stranded in Cambodia due to sharp increases in fuel expenses. The operator of the 200-meter Villa Vie Odyssey announced the pause more than 750 days into its journey, citing unsustainably high operating costs.
Fuel Price Surge Impacts Operations
According to Villa Vie Residences, monthly fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia escalated from $1,800 to as much as $8,000 (£6,000) following global fuel price increases tied to the conflict involving Iran earlier this year. The company stated it had previously implemented measures to conserve fuel, such as slowing its itinerary and extending port stays, but noted these steps were insufficient to offset the financial impact. The operator stated that passing the full cost increase onto residents was not realistic.
The company plans to spend the next 60 days focusing on restructuring and recapitalisation, though it noted that no specific outcome is assured. Villa Vie Residences said it is coordinating with passengers regarding disembarkation plans and temporary accommodation.
Passengers Disembark in Sihanoukville
An estimated 200 passengers were reportedly on board when they received notice at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday to disembark by 2:00 p.m. the same day in the Cambodian port city of Sihanoukville. The vessel has a maximum capacity of 650 passengers. Prior to the suspension, passengers had been asked to consider a fuel surcharge, while some chose to leave the ship early to continue travel on land.
Travelers disembarking in Sihanoukville expressed mixed reactions, with some noting logistical challenges due to the city's distance from a major international airport. Passengers were accommodated in various local hotels following their departure from the ship. Some guests plan to continue traveling through South East Asia, while others remain in Cambodia hoping the ship may eventually resume its itinerary.
Background of the Voyage
The Villa Vie Odyssey originally set sail from Belfast in October 2024 following initial repair delays that had kept the ship in port for months. The planned 3.5-year itinerary was designed to cover nearly 150 countries. Permanent cabin residences on the vessel were sold at prices ranging from $120,000 to $440,000, with rental options starting at $3,500 per month. The operator had also launched long-term residential options, including a lifetime retirement program and a four-year package offered in late 2024.
