Powderfinger Adds Nine New Tour Dates Following Rapid Ticket Sales
Australian rock band Powderfinger has announced nine additional concert dates for their upcoming reunion tour after the initial 26 shows sold out in six days. The sell-out saw all 300,000 tickets purchased, prompting the group to expand the tour with new stops including Hobart and Canberra, bringing the total schedule to 36 performances.
The reunion comes 16 years after the Brisbane group disbanded in 2010, a split that followed a farewell tour that drew 220,000 attendees. Band members Bernard Fanning, Darren Middleton, Ian Haug, John "JC" Collins, and Jon Coghill, alongside long-time manager Paul Piticco, spent 18 months planning the comeback in secret. Discussions began in May last year, with the members agreeing to proceed only if all five musicians were on board. A key motivation for the members was giving their children the opportunity to see the band perform live.
TOUR DETAILS AND SUPPORTING ACTS
The group will commence rehearsals in December to prepare for the nationwide tour. The concert format, featuring headlining outdoor shows under large tents, was inspired by Cold Chisel's "Big Five-O" anniversary performances. Powderfinger has committed to using an all-Australian lineup of supporting artists and is collaborating with triple j Unearthed to select emerging local talent for the tour.
While front man Bernard Fanning acknowledged that the reunion focuses on nostalgia rather than new material, he noted the group remains open to potential future song ideas. The band maintains its traditional democratic structure, requiring unanimous agreement on key decisions as they begin curating set lists for the upcoming shows.
