Sarah Klau Handed Fine and Suspended Ban Following Common Assault Charge

Australian netballer Sarah Klau has received a $5,000 fine and a 12-month fully suspended two-game ban from Netball Australia after pleading guilty to common assault and failing to declare the charge prior to the Commonwealth Games. The 31-year-old goalkeeper was also ordered to undergo additional educational programming following an internal investigation by the sport's governing body.

The disciplinary action stems from an incident on June 7 outside a Sydney pub, where Klau retaliated after being refused entry due to intoxication by kicking a security guard in the back. The incident occurred a day after she was sidelined from a NSW Swifts match to manage an ongoing leg injury. Charges were laid five weeks later, shortly before Klau departed for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she earned a bronze medal with the national team. Netball Australia confirmed it only learned of the matter prior to Klau's September 3 appearance at Sydney's Downing Centre Courthouse.

Sanctions and National Selection Impact

Netball Australia concluded that Klau breached its code of conduct by failing to maintain professional standards in public and bringing the game into disrepute. Chief executive Mark Falvo described the event as a significant but momentary lapse in judgment that was mitigated by her otherwise strong character. The governing body took into account her formal apologies to the victim and the venue, as well as her prior record.

Despite the sanction, Klau remains eligible for selection in the upcoming Constellation Cup against New Zealand. At the court hearing, the judge dismissed the matter without recording a criminal conviction, noting her status as an elite athlete and warning against alcohol-fueled misconduct. Netball NSW and her club, the NSW Swifts, confirmed they will continue to support Klau, having re-signed the veteran international for a fifth season. Commonwealth Games Australia had previously indicated it was awaiting the outcome of Netball Australia's investigation before assessing any further action regarding her status with the team.
