Russia Opens Terrorism Investigation Following Drone Strike on Nizhny Novgorod Industrial Site
Russian authorities have opened a criminal investigation on terrorism charges after a Ukrainian drone attack caused significant damage to an industrial facility in the Nizhny Novgorod region. State news agency TASS reported the launch of the probe following statements from the regional governor, who confirmed the facility suffered major damage during a massive overnight strike. No casualties were reported, and regional officials stated measures are underway to maintain fuel availability at local petrol stations.
Ukrainian media outlets identified the targeted site as the Kstovo oil refinery, describing it as one of Russia's largest facilities for producing fuel and lubricants. The strike follows statement by Russian official Alexander Novak, who noted that Ukraine recently resumed attacks on Russian energy infrastructure after a multi-day pause, hitting three oil refineries and a gas-chemical complex. Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously indicated a willingness to resume peace talks, and a Kremlin aide stated on Sunday that Putin would accept a call from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting initial negotiations should involve only Russia, Ukraine, and the United States.
Cross-Border Military and Infrastructure Strikes
The strike in Nizhny Novgorod occurred alongside broader aerial exchanges between both nations. Russia's Defence Ministry reported its forces downed 235 Ukrainian drones across various regions overnight. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces struck the Kamensky plant in Russia's Rostov region, alleging the site is involved in manufacturing Russian missiles. Kyiv has consistently targeted Russian oil and gas infrastructure in response to Moscow's ongoing offensive against Ukrainian energy networks, despite previous pressure from US President Donald Trump to halt strikes on oil facilities due to rising diesel costs.
Concurrently, heavy Russian strikes targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure across four regions overnight, leaving hundreds of thousands of households without electricity. President Zelenskyy reported via Telegram that the intensity of the Russian bombardments remains high as forces attempt to exploit Ukraine's shortage of ballistic missile interceptors. Ukraine's air force reported shooting down 371 of the 433 long-range drones launched by Russia since Saturday evening.
