Flávio Bolsonaro Faces Widespread Ridicule After Brief 'President-Elect' Claim and Flight to US

Far-right Brazilian politician Flávio Bolsonaro has drawn sharp criticism and public mockery from media outlets, commentators, and political allies following his departure to the United States and a brief social media declaration claiming to be Brazil's "true president-elect."

Bolsonaro left for Miami on Tuesday evening, two days after losing the presidential election to incumbent left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by 4.4 million votes. While international leaders—including El Salvador's Nayib Bukele and Italy's Giorgia Meloni—and key allies within Bolsonaro's own party recognized Lula's victory, Bolsonaro issued a letter from the U.S. asserting unfounded claims of electoral fraud and declaring himself the president-elect.

FLAWED DECLARATION AND FAST EDIT

The initial statement, reportedly drafted with the assistance of ChatGPT, drew immediate attention for its historical comparisons and errors. In the text, Bolsonaro likened his situation to historical figures who operated from exile, including French leader Charles de Gaulle, Cuban independence figure José Martí, Brazilian politician Rui Barbosa, and Venezuelan Nobel laureate María Corina Machado.

The document also featured an outdated Brazilian coat of arms bearing the name "United States of Brazil," a title retired in 1967. Fifty-eight minutes after its initial release, a revised version was posted changing his declared status to "leader of Brazil." Reports indicate the edit occurred following intervention by Trump administration officials seeking to prevent a diplomatic dispute with Brazil's official government.

MEDIA AND POLITICAL BACKLASH

Major Brazilian news publications and analysts issued scathing assessments of the move. Conservative newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo criticized the Bolsonaro family in an editorial, suggesting the event freed the democratic right from their influence and predicting Bolsonaro would fade into political irrelevance. Broadsheets O Globo and Folha de S. Paulo published critical commentary characterizing the departure and statement as embarrassing.

Criticism also emerged from allies of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. Televangelist Silas Malafaia referred to Bolsonaro's actions critically in remarks reported by O Globo. Meanwhile, Celso Amorim, chief foreign policy adviser to President Lula, characterized the outcome as the final gasp of an irrational radical right.

DIPLOMATIC POSITION AND INTERNATIONAL REACTION

While U.S. President Donald Trump described the election outcome as "a very great embarrassment to the people of Brazil," he declined to state whether he viewed Bolsonaro as the legitimate leader, stating he would not get involved. However, an internal U.S. diplomatic cable obtained by Folha de S. Paulo described Lula's victory as definitive.
