Russian Drone Hits Train Near Polish Border Following Diplomatic Passage

A Russian jet-propelled drone has struck the locomotive of a train at Yahodyn station near the Ukraine-Poland border, occurring shortly after high-level Western officials passed through the area. Ukrainian authorities reported no casualties, as passengers had been evacuated approximately 15 minutes prior to the impact, which occurred just two kilometers from Polish territory.

The incident took place following the departure of a diplomatic train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and British national security adviser Jonathan Powell. The delegation was returning from the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv. Ukraine's state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, stated that the diplomatic train had departed earlier than originally scheduled due to timetable adjustments made in response to ongoing strike threats, suggesting the drone may have targeted the official delegation.

International Figures in Transit

At the time of the attack, former CIA Director David Petraeus was onboard another train present at the Yahodyn station. Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, who also attended the Kyiv summit, reported that passengers on his train were instructed to prepare for an evacuation after stopping, before being cleared minutes later to proceed safely across the border to Dorohusk, Poland.

Moscow acknowledged targeting railway infrastructure in western Ukraine during the operation. However, Western and Ukrainian officials strongly condemned the strike. Boris Johnson characterized the action as a senseless attack on civilian infrastructure and called on Western partners to urgently supply Ukraine with additional air defense systems.

Diplomatic Reactions and Border Security

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned that the strike near the border demonstrates Russian military actions nearing EU and NATO frontiers, reiterating calls for increased international sanctions against Moscow. In response to the proximity of the strike, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting to address security concerns along the border.

The attack comes amid a broader pattern of Russian strikes targeting Ukrainian transport networks, petrol stations, and border posts. Because civilian air travel in Ukraine has been suspended since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the railway network serves as the primary mode of transportation for both domestic travelers and foreign diplomatic delegations.
