Religious Controversy Involving Patron Saint Shakes Up Brazilian Presidential Election

A growing controversy over Brazil’s patron saint, Our Lady of Aparecida, has emerged as a key issue in the final days of the country's deadlocked presidential race between left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and far-right challenger Flávio Bolsonaro.

The dispute follows widespread speculation that Flávio Bolsonaro, a former senator and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, might attempt to strip the patroness of her official status. While only the Vatican—which declared Our Lady of Aparecida Brazil’s patroness in 1930—has the authority to make such a change, the rumors have caused a nationwide reaction among Catholics, who make up nearly 57% of the Brazilian population.

Origins of the Election Row

Tensions escalated last week after a broadcast by Bolsonaro, whose political base includes a significant number of evangelical Christians, went viral online. In the video, Bolsonaro stated that one of his initial actions if elected president would be to "decree that Brazil belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ." Some Catholics interpreted the comment as an intention to unseat the patron saint.

Concerns were further fueled by Bolsonaro’s ties to JB Carvalho, an evangelical leader who previously called for the patroness's removal, as well as a dropped 2007 legislative attempt by another ally to achieve the same result. Bolsonaro has denied the allegations, calling them "fake news" and accusing Lula supporters and members of the Episcopal Conference of Brazil of spreading rumors. The Catholic bishops' organization rejected Bolsonaro's accusation.

Candidates React as Election Nears

With polls showing the two candidates level ahead of Sunday's vote, Lula’s campaign has actively addressed the debate. Lula, who is Catholic, has appeared at campaign events holding statuettes of the Virgin Mary, while his wife, Janja da Silva, has worn a pendant honoring the patron saint. Speaking at a rally in the Amazon, Lula asserted, "As long as I’m president, no one will disrespect Our Lady of Aparecida. No one. People need to learn to respect all religions."

Lula’s running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, released a video reassuring voters that their administration would protect sacred religious traditions. Political analyst Thomas Traumann noted that the debate has highlighted broader fears among Catholics regarding the growing political influence of evangelicals, who represent roughly 30% of the population. Historian Luiz Antônio Simas added that the figure of Our Lady of Aparecida holds deep cultural significance across Brazilian society, while also serving as a long-standing point of religious tension between Catholics and evangelicals.
