Ed Sheeran Addresses Macklemore Tour Controversy and Political Views at Philadelphia Show

Singer Ed Sheeran opened his solo concert in Philadelphia on Saturday by addressing the controversy surrounding his tour, admitting to making "mistakes" and sharing his stance on the Middle East conflict. The fallout follows the removal of rapper Macklemore from the tour lineup after he made pro-Palestinian comments on stage earlier in September.

Speaking to the audience at the start of the performance, Sheeran stated that while he never intended to be an activist musician, he found himself caught in a passionate debate regarding free speech and political issues. The artist clarified that the decision to drop Macklemore was made by his promoters rather than himself. Promoter Messina Touring Group previously stated Macklemore was dropped because certain venues threatened to cancel shows if he appeared. Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, confirmed he banned the rapper over his remarks, accusing him of hate speech. In response to Macklemore's removal, several opening acts, including Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, and Beoga, withdrew from the tour in solidarity.

During his first in-person remarks on the issue, Sheeran described the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks as "horrific" and stated that they "compounded centuries of Jewish pain." Addressing the ongoing war, he called the situation in Gaza "catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate," while also criticizing systemic injustice in the West Bank. Sheeran noted that although he usually avoids political commentary to promote unity through music, he felt compelled to speak out on what he termed a humanitarian issue.

Sheeran expressed gratitude to the attendees, emphasizing that his concerts remain inclusive spaces where individuals with opposing viewpoints can gather. He also voiced opposition to the concept of venues preapproving stage content or performers, a statement that drew applause from the crowd.

IMPACT ON TICKET SALES AND TOUR DATES

The fallout from the controversy led to declining ticket sales and price reductions for the remaining U.S. leg of Sheeran's Loop Tour, with some tickets dropping to $32 (£24). While fans reported receiving refunds, Ticketmaster and Messina Touring Group have not publicly confirmed reimbursement policies. Outside the venue, a small demonstration took place with pro-Palestinian protesters waving flags, though the show proceeded without major disruption. Sheeran's tour continues with scheduled dates across North and South America.
