Heavy Fog Engulfs Moss Lane During FA Cup Match Between Altrincham and Notts County
Dense fog created extraordinary conditions at Moss Lane as League One side Notts County secured a victory over fifth-tier National League team Altrincham in the FA Cup first round. The heavy mist descended on the Manchester stadium during the match, forcing extra time and a penalty shootout to be played under severely reduced visibility.
Challenging Match Conditions
Notts County, featuring former Sydney FC striker Luka Smyth, initially took a first-half lead before Altrincham responded to take the advantage. A late equalizer by Notts County forced the tie into extra time. As normal time drew to a close, a thick fog completely enveloped the field, drastically limiting sightlines across the stadium.
Broadcasters struggled to follow the action from their commentary positions. BBC commentator Steve Bower noted during the closing stages of regulation that the dugouts were obscured, while BBC Radio Nottingham play-by-play caller Adam Hassell said he could barely distinguish shirt numbers or see play on the far side of the pitch. Summarizer Mark Stallard remarked on the difficulty of covering the match when officials and players were completely out of view.
Shootout Decided in Near-Zero Visibility
The match ultimately proceeded to a penalty shootout held at the end of the ground in front of the Altrincham supporters. Notts County fans, positioned roughly 100 meters away at the opposite end of the stadium, were unable to clearly see the spot kicks and relied largely on crowd reactions from the home supporters to determine the outcome of each attempt.
Television commentators also faced significant difficulties identifying the shootout proceedings. During TNT Sports' broadcast, commentator Adam Summerton initially misjudged a penalty taken by Notts County's Max Sanders before video monitors confirmed the ball had entered the net. Following a missed attempt by Altrincham's Eddy Jones, Rosaire Longelo converted the final spot kick, sending Notts County through to the second round of the FA Cup.
