Unseasonable Warmth Hits Eastern US as Severe Weather Disrupts Midterms
Parts of eastern North America have experienced unusually high temperatures in recent days, with mercury levels reaching near 23C (73F) in New York and Boston. These temperatures are approximately 7C to 10C above typical early November averages. The unseasonable heat extended into eastern Canada, where temperatures exceeded 20C, standing roughly 10C to 15C above normal for this period. Weather experts attribute the warm conditions to a low-pressure system situated over the US Midwest that pulled warm air northward from the Gulf of Mexico. As the system moves eastward, temperatures are expected to return toward seasonal norms.
Severe Weather Affects US Midterm Elections
While northern regions experienced unusual warmth, severe thunderstorms triggered flood and evacuation warnings across several southern states. The disruptive weather impacted polling stations during the US midterm elections in Florida, Oklahoma, and Colorado. In Keyes, Oklahoma, a tornado touched down, causing extensive structural damage and forcing officials to relocate a polling station. No casualties were reported from the tornado. Officials in multiple states have requested federal financial assistance to address widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.
Heavy Rainfall and Flood Warnings in Southern Europe
Across the Atlantic, authorities in southern France, Corsica, and Sardinia issued severe flood warnings due to a low-pressure system bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms. Forecasts project between 50mm and 100mm (2 to 4 inches) of rain across the affected Mediterranean regions, with localized totals potentially exceeding 100mm in Corsica, as well as the French regions of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Occitanie. Prolonged downpours could produce up to 70-80mm of rainfall within 24 hours, with additional rain expected next week as low pressure persists over the area.
