Two Dead and Several Injured in Eastern France Bus Accident

A bus crash in eastern France has resulted in the deaths of a young girl and an 18-year-old man, according to local authorities. The incident occurred at approximately 07:00 local time on Friday in the town of Lent while the vehicle was traveling along a route between Lyon and Bourg-en-Bresse.

The Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor's office reported that the bus was carrying 43 passengers at the time of the crash, including 15 children. Authorities confirmed that three individuals are in critical condition, while at least 13 others suffered minor injuries. Official accounts have varied regarding the exact age of the young girl who died.

CRASH DETAILS AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Yves Cristin, the mayor of Lent, stated that the bus left the roadway and struck a tree located in a ditch. Images from the scene showed the front of the blue and white bus heavily damaged, with the vehicle tilted into the roadside ditch. Emergency personnel deployed medical helicopters to transport the most severely injured victims to a specialized hospital. The emergency response involved more than 100 firefighters and 50 gendarmes, and the local town hall was utilized to provide shelter and assist in coordinating relief efforts.

Commenting on the environmental conditions, Mayor Cristin noted that there was light fog and a wet road surface, though he indicated there were no major driving difficulties. Fabrice Pannekoucke, head of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, remarked that no specific explanation for the cause of the accident could be provided at this early stage.

INVESTIGATION AND OFFICIAL STATEMENTS

The prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the crash focusing on charges of road homicide and aggravated road traffic injuries. The bus driver was taken to a hospital for injuries sustained in the crash and has not yet been interviewed by police officers. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot stated that initial screening showed no traces of alcohol or drugs in the driver's blood. Tabarot added that while the bus did not serve exclusively as a school transport route, numerous schoolchildren were among the passengers.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his condolences to the victims, the injured, and their families, while praising the efforts of the rescue teams. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the crash as tragic and thanked the responding emergency services, firefighters, and police. French Education Minister Édouard Geffray also expressed sympathy regarding the involvement of children in the accident.
