Enric Mas Secures First Grand Tour Victory at Vuelta a España

Spanish cyclist Enric Mas of Team Movistar has won the Vuelta a España, securing the 31-year-old Mallorcan his first grand tour victory. Mas crossed the finish line safely in the peloton during the 21st and final stage into Granada, which was won by Norway's Tobias Johannessen.

Mas completed the general classification ahead of four-time Vuelta champion Primož Roglič, who placed second at 2 minutes and 15 seconds behind. Austria's Felix Gall rounded out the podium in third place, trailing the leader by 2:44. Mas's triumph marks the first overall victory by a Spanish rider at the Vuelta a España since Alberto Contador won the event in 2014.

Race Dynamics and Turning Points

The race initially saw pre-race favourite Tadej Pogačar establish a 3-minute and 50-second advantage by the seventh stage, having won three of the first six completed stages. However, the Slovenian rider crashed on the eighth stage, suffering a broken collarbone and a fractured neck that forced his retirement and ended his season.

Following Pogačar's exit, Mas and his Movistar team controlled the event. Mas had previously recorded runner-up finishes at the Vuelta in 2018, 2021, and 2022, alongside a third-place finish in 2024. To celebrate the general classification triumph, Movistar swapped their standard blue jerseys for red ones on the final stage.

Secondary Classifications and Reaction

In the race's secondary categories, Colombia's Santiago Buitrago of Team Bahrain Victorious secured the king of the mountains jersey. British cyclist Oscar Onley won the youth classification's white jersey. Wout van Aert captured both the green sprinters' jersey and the super combative award, returning to complete the event after crashing out of the lead in two classifications during the 2024 edition.

Speaking after the final stage, Mas described the day as special and noted that the long-awaited victory came after a smooth final ride. Former champion Alberto Contador publicly commended Mas, noting his persistence through past criticism and praising his performance throughout the multi-week race.
