UK Maintains Base Security After US Pulls B-1 Bombers From RAF Fairford

Downing Street has stated that RAF Fairford remains secure following the withdrawal of all US military bombers from the airbase in Gloucestershire. The Pentagon confirmed on Sunday that its aircraft, believed to consist of around twelve B-1 bombers, were returned from the Cotswolds facility to their home stations in the United States.

The removal follows an ongoing counter-terrorism investigation into a major incident on September 27, when police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles near the base. Five men were initially arrested on suspicion of terror offences and released on bail, while a sixth man, a UK-Iranian national, was also later arrested and released on bail. Prime Minister Andy Burnham previously stated there were strong indications of Iranian involvement, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted the incident involved a foreign actor. Tehran has strongly denied any connection to the events.

Security Responses and US Operational Decisions

Whitehall sources have not disputed that Washington decided to move the bombers in response to the security situation in Gloucestershire. Reports indicate the action was an operational military decision communicated between US and UK defense officials following new specific details regarding an alleged threat. Ezra Cohen, a former US defense official, described the move to safeguard the strategic B-1 fleet as prudent.

Addressing the situation, a No 10 spokesperson declined to comment on foreign military operations but reaffirmed the base's safety, highlighting recent praise from US President Donald Trump regarding British security services. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting also noted that established approaches are in place to protect bases domestically and globally. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated he would not directly connect the aircraft movements to the security incident, noting that redeployments and asset movements occur regularly, while confirming full confidence in base security and UK cooperation.

Impact on Strategic Capabilities and Local Reaction

RAF Fairford has long functioned as a forward operating location for the US Air Force, with B-1 and B-52 bombers recently deployed from the facility for operations in the Middle East. While the US retains the capability to conduct long-range precision strikes directly from its mainland, departing the site reduces its forward presence in Europe. Liberal Democrat defense spokesperson James MacCleary called the withdrawal deeply concerning and asked the government to ensure military facilities remain fit for purpose. Meanwhile, local residents near the base expressed relief over the departure of the aircraft, citing concerns over noise and safety following the recent security heightened alerts.
