Deadly Drone and Missile Strikes Escalated by Russia and Ukraine Across Moscow and Kyiv Regions

A massive overnight drone attack targeting the Moscow region has left at least two people dead and six others injured, local officials reported on Sunday. According to Moscow Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyev, Russian defense forces shot down 249 drones during the assault, which sparked fires at several residential properties and a local warehouse.

The fatalities in the Moscow region included a 44-year-old woman, who died when a drone struck a three-storey residential building in Sofyino, injuring five others including two children. In the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, an elderly man was killed after a private residence was hit. In Moscow itself, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that air defenses downed 450 drones heading toward the capital in an unprecedented attack. A drone damaged a facility at a Moscow oil refinery, and another struck a building near a city boulevard. The strike led to temporary flight suspensions at Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports, though operations resumed by Sunday morning with warnings of potential delays.

Deadly Russian Strikes Reported Across Ukraine

Simultaneously, Ukrainian officials reported eight fatalities, including three children, resulting from Russian attacks in the Kyiv and Sumy regions on Saturday. In the city of Fastiv, Kyiv regional head Tymur Tkachenko confirmed that a mother and her two young children were killed when private homes were damaged. Another child died in a hospital following a separate strike in Vyshhorod, north of Kyiv.

In the northeastern Sumy region, four people died after a Russian drone targeted the vehicle in which they were traveling, according to local official Oleh Hryhorov. Both nations have escalated strikes against transport, logistics, and energy-generating facilities in recent days, continuing attacks on energy infrastructure despite claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that both sides had agreed to refrain from targeting energy assets.

U.S. Moves to Enforce Energy Sanctions

The recent intensification follows the signing of a sanctions bill by U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday. The legislation targets the Russian economy by authorizing the U.S. executive branch to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India.
