Denmark Summons Russian Ambassador After Warship Fires Flares at Military Helicopter

Denmark has summoned the Russian ambassador after accusing a Russian warship of firing two emergency flares at a Danish military helicopter during a routine monitoring operation in the Baltic Sea. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the Russian action as reckless, stating it was intended to intimidate and divide.

Baltic Sea Incident Details

According to the Danish armed forces, a Danish Air Force Fennec helicopter was conducting a routine photographic operation of a Russian frigate located in international waters off Gedser when the vessel fired flares. Military officials confirmed that two flares were launched toward the aircraft, with one passing close to it. Danish Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus noted that the crew of the Russian frigate made no attempt to establish communication with the helicopter before firing.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen condemned the event as completely unacceptable, accusing Russia of attempting to gradually shift the boundaries of acceptable behavior. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also criticized the incident, describing it as reckless and dangerous, adding that it forms part of a wider pattern of Russian provocation against Europe.

Russia Promises Investigation, Alleges Provocation

In response, Russian Ambassador Vladimir Barbin stated that Moscow would thoroughly investigate all circumstances surrounding the event. However, Barbin accused the Danish helicopter of engaging in provocative actions and dangerous maneuvers near Russian naval vessels. He added that he had raised similar concerns last year and argued that communication issues stem from the Danish side rather than Russian naval ships.

Broader Regional Security Encounters

The confrontation in the Baltic Sea coincided with additional military activity across NATO's eastern flank. Overnight, NATO fighter pilots shot down a drone in Lithuanian airspace that authorities believe entered southern Lithuania from neighboring Belarus. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda pointed to escalating Russian aggression in the region and emphasized the necessity of regional air defense readiness.

Concurrently, Poland reported conducting preventive aviation operations in its airspace due to Russian jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle strikes against targets in Ukraine. These operations were intended to protect Polish airspace, particularly near vulnerable regions adjacent to the conflict zone.
