Cooler Temperatures and Showers Forecast for Queensland Eastern Coast

Queensland's eastern districts are experiencing a shift toward cooler conditions and scattered showers over the weekend following recent sweltering temperatures. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, persistent cloud cover is contributing to slightly below-average temperatures across coastal areas.

Rainfall and Coastal Conditions

Rainfall totals between 2 and 10 millimetres are expected along parts of the eastern Queensland coast, with isolated areas on the north tropical coast and south-east coast potentially receiving more than 10 millimetres. Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Shane Kennedy noted that multiple rounds of showers are likely throughout the weekend, though conditions on the north tropical coast are expected to be lighter compared to Friday.

Offshore wind surges are continuing to abate, leading to easing conditions for marine activities. Coastal wind warnings have largely contracted to far north-eastern waters and are anticipated to be cancelled by Sunday as a high-pressure ridge weakens. While hazardous surf warnings remain active for northern New South Wales, the severe wave activity is projected to stay offshore and is not expected to impact Queensland beaches.

Inland Heat and Fire Danger

In contrast to the cooler coastal weather, warmer conditions will persist in the state's interior. Western Queensland is forecast to reach the low to mid-30s, with far south-western areas climbing into the mid-30s by late weekend as winds shift to the north-north-east ahead of a new trough system early next week. Regional temperatures elsewhere will generally range from the low to mid-20s in the south-east to the mid to high 20s in central Queensland and the Far North.

Inland areas, including the Channel Country, face a chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms before conditions dry out toward the end of the weekend. Additionally, elevated fire danger ratings remain in place for portions of western and north-western Queensland due to a combination of warm, dry conditions and persistent winds. However, officials do not expect conditions to reach extreme levels or necessitate formal fire weather warnings at this stage.
