Brazilians Vote in Tight Presidential Runoff Between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro
Brazilians headed to the polls on Sunday to vote in a closely contested presidential runoff between incumbent leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
The election follows a first-round victory by Flávio Bolsonaro, who led the initial vote by less than 2%, marking the narrowest margin ever recorded in a first-round contest. Despite initial polling advantages for Bolsonaro three weeks ago, recent polling shows the two candidates entering Sunday's vote virtually tied, though final polls published on Saturday maintained a slight lead for Bolsonaro. The outcome will be determined by Latin America's largest electorate of 159 million voters, with official results expected late Sunday evening.
CANDIDATES AND CAMPAIGN STRATEGIES
The runoff features contrasting political backgrounds and platforms. The 45-year-old Bolsonaro, a long-serving congressman prior to his senate tenure, is the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The elder Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for attempting a coup following his 2022 election loss to Lula. The senator has promised to pardon his father if elected, modify the constitution, and build five large-scale prisons modeled on policies in El Salvador. He is currently facing two federal police inquiries regarding allegations of corruption and money laundering.
Lula, the 80-year-old president, focused his runoff strategy on voter turnout due to record abstention rates in the first round. His campaign shifted its digital strategy and gained momentum from widespread student-led demonstrations across the country.
VOTING AND RECENT INCIDENTS
Both candidates cast their ballots on Sunday morning. Bolsonaro voted in Rio de Janeiro's north zone, stating that change was necessary for the country. Lula cast his vote in São Bernardo do Campo, where he expressed gratitude for public support during the runoff campaign.
The final days of the campaign saw large rallies in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte, alongside reports of political violence. In northern Minas Gerais state, Iara Pimentel, a local councillor from Lula's party, was hospitalized after her motorcade was hit by glass bottles and bricks thrown by Bolsonaro supporters.
