Three Children and Teacher Killed in Oregon Elementary School Shooting

A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon before a community member fatally shot the suspect inside the facility, according to local police.

The deceased young victims were five, eight, and 11 years old. Authorities confirmed that a seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were rushed to a hospital in critical condition following the attack. Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims or the teenage suspect, and it remains unclear whether the perpetrator had any connections to the school.

How the Incident Unfolded

Bend Police Department spokeswoman Sheila Miller reported that emergency dispatch received the initial active shooter call at 12:59 p.m. local time (19:59 GMT). The caller stated that an unidentified individual was firing a long gun into their vehicle. Photographs from the scene revealed a red pickup truck marked with bullet holes.

Subsequent emergency calls indicated that the suspect had breached the school building. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz explained that the 16-year-old forced his way into the building by opening fire on locked doors. A local bystander witnessed the event, pursued the attacker into Silver Rail Elementary, and engaged the gunman, shooting him dead. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene three minutes after the suspect was neutralized.

Official Responses and Community Impact

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek commended the bystander during a news conference, stating the individual heroically intervened to prevent additional casualties. Steven Cook, the top administrator for the local school district, issued a statement expressing profound grief over the tragic event.

Silver Rail Elementary School serves approximately 450 students and employs more than 40 adult staff members. Local reporter Michael Kohn noted that the school went into lockdown during the attack, with some students using Apple watches to contact their parents outside. Authorities announced that all Bend schools would remain closed on Friday.
