Suspected Methanol Poisoning Kills at Least 48 in Southern Nigeria

At least 48 people have died and approximately 100 others are undergoing medical treatment in southern Nigeria following the consumption of a locally brewed alcoholic beverage suspected to be contaminated with methanol, health authorities reported on Thursday.

The toxic outbreak has affected an estimated 182 individuals across the Odigbo and Irele local government areas in Ondo state, according to Banji Ajaka, the state commissioner for health. Ajaka noted that the onset of symptoms occurs rapidly after ingestion, causing severe damage to internal organs, vision loss, and brain impairment depending on the amount consumed.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Following the deaths, law enforcement officials launched a crackdown on the illicit alcohol trade. Ondo state police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh confirmed in a statement that 15 individuals have been detained in connection with the incident. Among those arrested is a suspect alleged to be involved in manufacturing the substance suspected of containing methanol, who is currently aiding investigators.

Local residents suspect the casualties stem from a variant of "Monkey Tail," a widespread alcoholic herbal mixture. A local vendor in Odigbo, speaking anonymously, stated that two versions of the drink circulate in the market: one traditional formula and an unsafe, adulterated alternative. Local news outlets indicate that the initial fatality connected to the outbreak occurred nearly two weeks prior.

Regulatory Response

Unregulated, locally produced liquor is widely consumed in rural regions of Nigeria due to its affordability compared to commercial brands. In response to public health risks associated with informal alcohol sales, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control is implementing a nationwide prohibition on selling alcohol packaged in sachets and small plastic bottles to limit accessibility among minors.
