Severe Weather Hits Greece, Turkey, India and Mexico as Super Typhoon In-fa Strengthens
Severe weather systems are impacting multiple regions globally, bringing heavy rainfall, violent winds, flooding, and mass evacuations. Severe rainfall and flood warnings have been issued for central Greece and western Turkey, while Cyclone Arnab has struck eastern India and Super Typhoon In-fa moves across the western Pacific Ocean.
Fatal Tornado and Severe Flood Warnings in Europe and Turkey
An area of low pressure over south-eastern Europe and Turkey has generated intense thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds. On Tuesday, a tornado spawned by a severe thunderstorm in the south-western Turkish coastal city of Antalya killed four construction workers. Authorities in both Greece and Turkey have issued severe rainfall and flood warnings. Central Greece and western Turkey are expected to receive an additional 100 to 150 mm of rain this week, with locally higher amounts possible.
Cyclone Arnab Triggers Mass Evacuations in India
In South Asia, Cyclone Arnab made landfall across the Indian states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, bringing rainfall exceeding 200 mm in some areas and wind gusts above 85 mph (140 km/h). The extreme weather forced the evacuation of more than 180,000 people and caused major disruptions to transport and energy infrastructure. Although the storm is forecast to weaken as it moves northward in the coming days, it will continue to deliver heavy rain to central and northern parts of India.
Super Typhoon In-fa Intensifies in the Pacific
In the western Pacific Ocean, Typhoon In-fa was upgraded on Wednesday to a super typhoon. The storm has reached sustained wind speeds of 150 mph (240 km/h) and gusts exceeding 185 mph (296 km/h). Moving north-westward, In-fa is expected to miss Guam—which was hit by Typhoon Champi earlier this month—but is projected to affect the Mariana Islands. The island chain has already experienced four super typhoons this year.
Tropical Storm Vance Impacts Western Mexico
Across the Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Vance weakened into a tropical depression after impacting western Mexico. The system brought dangerous coastal conditions alongside 50 to 100 mm of rain to Sinaloa, Durango, and Nayarit, with localized totals topping 150 mm. Authorities expect the rainfall to trigger flooding and landslides, while storm swells present hazardous surf and rip currents along the coast.
