South African Police Investigate String of Deaths Following Discovery of Ninth Woman's Body

South African law enforcement officials are investigating a series of unexplained deaths east of Johannesburg after confirming the discovery of a ninth woman's body within a two-month period. The latest victim, believed to be a woman in her 30s, was found Thursday morning on the side of a road in Dawn Park, half-naked, wrapped in a sheet, and bearing apparent bruises and stab wounds. Her identity has not yet been released.

The discovery marks the ninth body found across the Ekurhuleni urban region since July 15, when the first victim was located in Kempton Park. A suspect arrested two days after the initial discovery remains in custody, though police have not linked that individual to the subsequent cases. Additional bodies have been recovered in Kempton Park, Olifantsfontein, Clayville, and KwaThema throughout August and September. Several victims were discovered partially clothed with visible injuries.

IDENTIFIED VICTIMS AND POLICE INVESTIGATION

Among the nine victims, authorities have identified 38-year-old Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, who disappeared after going for a run and was located three days later behind a hotel in Kempton Park. Two other identified victims include Itumeleng Kekana, missing since July, and 38-year-old Dineo Evelyn Motapane, whose body was discovered roadside in KwaThema on Tuesday.

A multidisciplinary team consisting of detectives, intelligence officers, and forensic experts has been assembled to determine whether connections exist among the cases. Investigators are pursuing a person of interest, though details regarding specific links have not been disclosed. Authorities noted they are exploring whether a group of individuals is responsible, while Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia cautioned against speculation, stating the cases currently appear to be distinct, separate events. Officials have not confirmed the involvement of a serial killer.

OFFICIAL RESPONSE AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that no stone would be left unturned in locating those responsible for the deaths, acknowledging the fear created in local communities. Authorities have offered a reward of 400,000 rand ($24,000) for information leading to arrests and are requesting assistance from families with missing relatives to help identify the remaining victims. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi affirmed that authorities possess the capacity to resolve the killings.

The South African Police Service described the recent rise in violent crimes against women as a matter of grave concern. Police advised women to practice safety precautions, including avoiding walking alone or using isolated routes, staying alert to suspicious vehicles, sharing travel plans with trusted contacts, and refraining from using headphones at high volumes in public spaces.
