Brazilians Go to the Polls in High-Stakes Presidential Election
Brazilians are voting in a tightly contested presidential election that pits incumbent leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva against far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Polls show a close race between the 80-year-old Lula, who is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term, and the 45-year-old son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. If no candidate secures a majority of the vote, a runoff will take place on October 25.
The election is widely viewed as a pivotal moment for Latin America's political balance. Following recent right-wing electoral victories in the region and the US intervention in Venezuela, Brazil remains one of only six Latin American nations with a left-wing government, alongside Mexico, Uruguay, Guatemala, Cuba, and Nicaragua.
FOREIGN POLICY AND REGIONAL ALIGNMENT
The two main candidates present sharply contrasting foreign policy visions, particularly regarding relations with the United States and US President Donald Trump. Flávio Bolsonaro has pledged to join the Shield of the Americas, a 15-country regional coalition backed by Trump, and adopt an "iron fist" policy toward crime. He has also offered access to Brazil's critical minerals and rare earths to assist the US in reducing its trade reliance on China.
In contrast, Lula has declined US demands regarding access to critical minerals to avoid trade tariffs and expressed strong concerns over national sovereignty. Lula has openly criticized Latin American leaders participating in the US-led coalition, while accusations of US interference in favor of Bolsonaro have further strained relations between Brasilia and Washington.
DOMESTIC ISSUES AND CANDIDATE BACKGROUNDS
Lula's administration has overseen reductions in unemployment, poverty, and inflation, as well as an increase in average incomes. However, high levels of household debt remain a challenge, which some attribute to online gambling that Lula banned shortly before the vote. His campaign has also faced ongoing investigations into corruption allegations involving his son and a former aide.
Flávio Bolsonaro entered the race as his father, Jair Bolsonaro, is under house arrest following a conviction for attempting a coup after losing the 2022 election to Lula. The younger Bolsonaro, whose previous executive bid was a fourth-place finish in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro mayoral race, has drawn support from his father's voter base and anti-Lula sentiment, despite past and ongoing corruption investigations.
