US Television Networks Boycott White House Coverage Following Media Ban

Major U.S. television networks suspended their shared pool coverage of President Donald Trump on Monday after the White House barred reporters from CNN, Politico, and MS NOW. The decision left major broadcast outlets without network television footage of the president boarding Air Force One or arriving in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

Outlets File Lawsuit Over Access Denial

The restrictions follow an announcement by President Trump on Friday, in which he accused the three news organizations of reporting fiction and lies regarding his administration. According to the outlets, their journalists were refused entry to the White House on Saturday. In response, CNN, Politico, and MS NOW filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Washington on Monday to challenge the revocation of their press credentials.

In a joint statement, the organizations argued that the White House revoked access without notice or process due to objections over their reporting. They stated that leaving the action unchallenged would threaten press freedom and the public's right to news free from government interference.

Pool Coverage Suspended and Alternative Media Response

Under standard arrangements, media organizations operate a pool system to share footage and reduce expenses during presidential events. Bryan Boughton, the Fox News Washington bureau chief currently helping organize White House television crews, confirmed in an email that the TV pool would cease covering events designated for pool coverage. Boughton noted that the move came after the White House prevented CNN from fulfilling its scheduled pool duties for the president's trip to New York, adding that no replacement pool would be established.

Other news organizations also refused to participate in pooled coverage, with publications such as The New York Times and The Washington Post declining to share still photographs from Monday's presidential events. During a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Marine One helipad on the White House South Lawn, the White House streamed the event online independently, though the president's remarks were inaudible. The White House has also launched its own 24-hour streaming feed, named Trump TV, to broadcast clips of the president.

President Dismisses Boycott Concerns

President Trump later appeared on television following a meeting with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who noted at a subsequent press conference that all press members were welcome. Responding to questions about the news blackout, President Trump expressed unconcern over the boycott, stating that media outlets regularly claim they will boycott him but ultimately do not.
