US Singer D4vd's Defence Team Withdraws Ahead of Murder Trial

The private defence attorneys representing American musician D4vd have officially withdrawn from his murder case, leading to the appointment of a public defender ahead of his trial in Los Angeles. The singer, whose legal name is David Anthony Burke, faces charges connected to the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

On Monday, Burke appeared in a Los Angeles court where he re-entered a plea of not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, child sexual abuse, and the mutilation of human remains. A judge determined last month that the 21-year-old artist will stand trial following the discovery of the victim's remains in September 2025 inside a Tesla registered to his address.

Change in Legal Counsel

Burke's former defence attorneys, Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski, and Regina Peter, confirmed in a statement that the court approved their request to step down from the case. The attorneys stated that Burke qualified for appointed counsel and expressed gratitude that the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office would take over his representation. Berk has previously represented prominent public figures, including Mel Gibson, Harvey Weinstein, Britney Spears, and Lindsay Lohan.

Following the court decision, the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office was assigned to mount Burke's defence. Deputy Public Defender Walid Kandeel stated that Burke is entitled to a defence that carefully examines the evidence and takes his circumstances seriously, adding that his new legal team is committed to providing that representation.

Prosecution Case and Legal Proceedings

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated outside the courtroom that prosecutors are ready to move forward with the case. However, Hochman acknowledged that the change in legal representation could require additional time for the defense to review evidence, potentially delaying proceedings or leading to pre-trial motions. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for 19 October.

Prosecutors allege that Burke stabbed Hernandez at his Hollywood home after years of sexual abuse and subsequently dismembered her body. According to evidence presented during a preliminary hearing, prosecutors contend Burke killed the teenager because she threatened to expose his relationship with a minor, which could harm his music career.

Court records show that on 22 April 2025, Hernandez sent text messages threatening to ruin Burke's life and career during an argument over his friendship with another girl. The following day, Hernandez traveled to Burke's residence in a ride sent by him, where prosecutors allege the fatal assault occurred. The murder charges against Burke include special circumstances allegations linked to financial gain, which make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
