US and Iran Exchange Military Strikes in Strait of Hormuz and Jordan

The United States and Iran have engaged in direct military strikes against each other for the first time in weeks following an American assault on targets on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command stated that its forces carried out a limited and precise action against Iranian rocket launchers that posed an imminent threat to maritime safety, marking the first recorded US strike on Iranian territory since late July.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that the US attack resulted in two deaths and injured two others. In response, the IRGC claimed it shot down a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz and launched retaliatory ballistic missile strikes targeting two US bases in Jordan, specifically the King Hussein and al-Azraq sites. Iranian media reported that the missile attacks caused heavy damage to technical infrastructure and fighter jet positions, while the Jordanian military confirmed it intercepted eight incoming missiles early Monday morning.

Rising Escalation and Economic Tensions

The strikes occurred at a critical geographic location near the port of Bandar Abbas. Larak Island sits directly on the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route that historically handled roughly 20 percent of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas. Iran has recently been directing tanker traffic past the island for inspections and reportedly charging vessels $2 million to pass through the waterway.

Iranian officials condemned the American actions, with IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi describing the operation as a fatal strategic mistake that would bring economic and military consequences. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that while Tehran does not seek war, it will deliver a decisive response to aggression.

The exchange follows a renewed US economic sanctions campaign announced on August 24 designed to further isolate Tehran and its partners. Tensions originally escalated sharply after the US and Israel launched widespread strikes against Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory attacks across the region and disrupting maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz over the course of the six-month conflict.
