Ukraine Resumes Attacks on Russian Refineries as Energy Ceasefire Claims Fall Short

Ukraine has restarted targeted strikes against Russian oil refineries, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signaling an end to compliance with a proposed energy ceasefire. The move comes as commentary from Kyiv highlights the unilateral nature of recent ceasefire claims made by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Speaking live from Kyiv, Peter Zalmayev, the Founder and Director of the Eurasia Democracy Initiative, discussed the developments with journalist Delano D'Souza. Zalmayev questioned the validity of the announced energy standstill, emphasizing that any functional agreement requires mutual participation. He noted that the concept of an energy ceasefire presupposes agreement from both sides, whereas Russian forces have continued to target Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure.

Strategic Considerations and Western Relations

According to Zalmayev, Ukraine views operations against Russian refineries as a critical point of leverage for any potential future peace negotiations. However, he cautioned that President Zelensky must carefully balance tactical military decisions against the necessity of maintaining vital support from the United States.

The discussion also covered broader geopolitical and economic factors surrounding the conflict. Zalmayev addressed the current state of Western sanctions, the status of frozen Russian assets, and concerns regarding Washington's potential moves toward economic normalization with Moscow in the absence of significant concessions from the Russian government.
