Toby Greene Joins Geelong as AFL Free Agency Opens

Toby Greene has officially joined Geelong as an unrestricted free agent following a 15-season tenure with Greater Western Sydney. The 33-year-old former Giants captain, who kicked 450 goals in 282 games for GWS, has signed a lucrative three-year contract to return to his home state of Victoria. Greater Western Sydney will receive a second-round draft compensation pick, currently set at selection 26, for the triple All-Australian and two-time club champion.

Free Agency and Trade Window Player Movement

Several other roster moves marked the start of the AFL free agency period, which runs until next Friday before the trade period takes place from October 5 to October 14. Key forward Joel Amartey completed a move from Sydney to Carlton as an unrestricted free agent, with the Swans earning draft compensation. Additionally, Brisbane Lions star Lachie Neale is set to complete a transfer to Collingwood, while Melbourne vice-captain Jack Viney met with West Coast to discuss a potential move after being informed of limited midfield availability with the Demons.

Hawks Re-Sign Calsher Dear

Hawthorn forward Calsher Dear has rejected interest from Melbourne to sign a new two-year deal with the Hawks. The 21-year-old scored 25 goals in 17 games during his 2024 debut season before injuries restricted him to 14 total appearances across 2025 and 2026. Hawthorn's key forward options are expected to expand further in 2027, with Gold Coast restricted free agent Ben King anticipated to join the club.
