South Australian Authorities Find No Health Records for Parents Charged After Baby Found Dead
South Australian health authorities have found no electronic medical records associated with a mother or her deceased baby boy following his discovery at a suburban motel in Glen Osmond. The child's body was discovered at the Tollgate Motel, located southeast of the Adelaide CBD, on October 10.
Police have charged the child's parents, 42-year-old Yue Ning Lieu, also known as Linda Lieu, and 40-year-old Benjamin Nicholas Houghton, with criminal neglect and concealing human remains. Post-mortem analysis determined the infant was between six and seven months old and had been deceased for a period of time before being found.
Health and Protection System Checks
Health Minister Blair Boyer confirmed that a comprehensive search across SA Health's shared electronic record-keeping system yielded no information regarding the mother or the child. Mr. Boyer noted that while authorities cannot yet confirm whether the baby was born in South Australia or interstate, any visit to a connected SA Health facility would have been recorded in the database.
Additionally, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas stated that the family was not previously known to the SA Department of Child Protection.
Legal and Custodial Status
According to police, the parents had been residing at the Tollgate Motel since arriving in South Australia at the beginning of the year. Following their arrest, both individuals were detained under the Mental Health Act. They appeared at a bedside court hearing on Monday and have been remanded in custody until May 2027 while police investigations into the unexplained death remain ongoing.
