Russia Hits Ukraine Grid in Largest Energy Infrastructure Strike Since Spring

Russia has executed its largest strike on Ukraine's energy infrastructure since spring, focusing heavily on Kyiv and the surrounding territory. According to officials, overnight attacks spanning 11 regions resulted in at least five deaths, including that of a child in the Kyiv region, while causing widespread power outages and severe structural damage.

Impact on Energy Grid and Infrastructure

Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi noted that while Russian strikes against energy assets have occurred almost daily since summer, a combined mass attack of this magnitude has not been seen since the conclusion of the previous heating season. Apart from power facilities, the bombardments targeted residential structures, social infrastructure, civilian businesses, and railway lines across the country.

The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed targeting the Trypilska power plant, located roughly 40 kilometers from Kyiv, claiming the thermal facility supplies power to Ukrainian defence enterprises. Plant operator Centrenergo confirmed damage to the site and stated it is evaluating the full extent of the destruction. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported additional strikes against critical infrastructure in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, and Rivne regions.

Casualties and Local Disruption

Kyiv Regional Head Timur Tkachenko reported that a child was found dead beneath the rubble of a damaged house. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klischko stated that three people died in the capital, including a utility company employee killed at a warehouse. Officials also reported one death in the southern Mykolaiv region and two fatalities in the north-eastern Sumy region, where a strike additionally damaged a school.

The attacks left Kyiv blanketed in thick smoke on Wednesday morning, prompting local authorities to advise residents in several districts to keep their windows closed. While private energy company DTEK restored electricity to 8,000 homes in the capital, households in the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions remained without power. State grid operator Ukrenergo urged citizens to refrain from using high-power electrical appliances between 10:00 and 16:00 local time due to reduced generation capacity.

Military Developments and Counter-Operations

Russia's military claimed to have intercepted over 380 Ukrainian drones overnight across multiple regions, including Moscow. Concurrently, Ukrainian forces reported striking several military targets, including a drone warehouse located in the Russian-occupied portion of the Donetsk region.

On the ground, Ukraine's Third Army Corps announced the recapture of several settlements near Lyman in the Donetsk region as part of a counter-offensive effort designated Operation Vivaldi. President Zelensky visited troops deployed in that sector on Wednesday, though front lines across the broader conflict zone remain largely unchanged.
