Pattaya Heightens Security as Thousands of USS Abraham Lincoln Sailors Prepare for Shore Leave

Authorities in the Thai resort city of Pattaya have intensified security preparations to host thousands of U.S. sailors and marines from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, following the vessel's extended deployment of over 270 consecutive days at sea.

According to provincial governor Narit Niramaiwong, approximately 600 officials will be deployed to provide security and operational assistance during the visit. The carrier is scheduled to dock at Laem Chabang port just after midnight on Wednesday (around 5 p.m. GMT on Tuesday) before departing on Sunday. Approximately 40 buses have been arranged to shuttle personnel between the port and Pattaya in staggered shifts.

Deployment Context and Onboard Conditions

The USS Abraham Lincoln left California in November 2025, initially assigned to the South China Sea before being rerouted to the Middle East ahead of U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran that launched six months ago. The ship's deployment set a record with more than 270 uninterrupted days at sea. Earlier this August, the USS George Washington relieved the Lincoln in the Middle East, allowing the carrier to travel past Singapore over the weekend on its journey back to the United States.

Reports regarding deteriorating living conditions and poor mental health among the crew, including attempted suicides, have drawn media coverage in the United States and prompted criticism of President Donald Trump's war against Iran. President Trump downplayed concerns about the ship's extended deployment, stating it was "not nearly long enough." Following the scheduled stop in Thailand, Thai officials confirmed the warship will return directly to the U.S.

City Regulations and Safety Measures

Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches stated that following meetings with U.S. officials on Monday, service members will be prohibited from engaging in certain activities, including parasailing and the consumption of cannabis, which Thailand legalized for medical use in 2022. Local authorities have also warned businesses against overcharging visiting military personnel.

Increased police patrols will be stationed along key areas, including Pattaya Beach and Walking Street. Pattaya Police Chief Anek Srathongyoo emphasized that law enforcement agencies are ordered to heighten security to prevent incidents, noting that any U.S. service members who violate Thai laws will face prosecution. While the city recently carried out crackdowns on sex workers, Mayor Poramase denied that these actions were tied to the warship's arrival.

Local Economic Impact

Pattaya's history with U.S. military personnel dates back to the Vietnam War in the 1960s, when the former fishing village became a primary rest and recreation destination for American troops. Today, local business owners experiencing a downturn in tourism due to the conflict with Iran are anticipating the crew's arrival, with some venues displaying welcome banners. However, some local workers expressed uncertainty about how many of the estimated 5,000 personnel will visit individual establishments during their short leave.
