flydubai Flight Bound for Tel Aviv Diverted After Cockpit Attack Thwarted

A flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a cockpit attack caused the aircraft to plunge thousands of feet, officials said. Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 Max 8 carrying 174 people, departed Dubai International Airport at 7:05 a.m. local time on Wednesday before the incident unfolded over Saudi Arabian airspace.

Mid-Air Chaos and Rapid Altitude Loss

According to flight tracking data, the aircraft was cruising at nearly 35,000 feet before suddenly dropping tens of thousands of feet at 9:21 a.m. Dubai time. In total, the plane lost more than 20,000 feet in minutes, experiencing sharp drops and brief altitude gains. Passenger Almog Italie described the experience as feeling like massive turbulence, noting the plane dropped for 20 to 30 seconds at a time before balancing out.

Cockpit Struggle and Passenger Intervention

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that one pilot stabbed the other in an apparent effort to crash the aircraft. Doron Spielman, a spokesperson for the Israeli prime minister's office, reported that the wounded captain, identified as Indian national Smit Machchhar, opened the cockpit door release while lying injured on the floor.

Passengers and crew members rushed to the front of the plane after noticing the disruption. Spielman stated that an attacking pilot was seen bashing the control panel before being subdued by a passenger. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz praised several Israeli passengers who entered the cockpit to restrain the attacker and hand control to a reserve crew on board.

Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia

Air traffic control received a distress signal at 9:44 a.m. Dubai time. Flight tracking data briefly disappeared around 10:15 a.m. when the plane had descended to approximately 5,000 feet. A flydubai spokesperson confirmed that a reserve crew took control and redirected the flight to Tabuk Airport in north-western Saudi Arabia, briefly entering Jordanian airspace during the approach.

Machchhar underwent surgery in Saudi Arabia and is in stable condition, according to the Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia. Leaders from Israel and India praised his actions during the attack.

Flydubai stated that the motives behind the incident remain unknown and cautioned against premature speculation while investigations continue. Passengers reported receiving medical attention, food, and assistance upon landing safely in Saudi Arabia.
