Australian Hiker Jordan Yap Missing After Solo Trek in Peru

A widespread search is underway in Peru for Jordan Yap, a 30-year-old Australian hiker from Melbourne who disappeared during a solo trek in the Andes mountains. Yap last communicated with family and friends on September 14 before embarking on a planned 10-day expedition along the Cordillera Huayhuash circuit, located approximately 400 kilometers northeast of Lima. Concern grew after he failed to make contact on Wednesday, his anticipated completion date, and subsequently missed a scheduled flight from Lima to Cusco on Thursday. His luggage remains stored at the Krusty hostel in Huaraz, where he was expected to return.

Search Efforts and Family Concerns

Yap’s family has hired Socorro Andino Peruano, a local mountain rescue group, to conduct search operations along the remote 120-kilometer high-altitude trail. On Saturday, private rescue crews executed their largest search effort to date, sweeping multiple paths across the mountain circuit without locating any sign of the missing trekker. Family members noted that Yap had misplaced his satellite communication beacon days prior to starting the expedition, hindering tracking efforts. However, he was equipped with a recently purchased GPS watch containing offline maps, a 40-liter backpack, a Durston dome tent, and hiking poles, and was last seen wearing a white jacket, green sunshade sweater, and grey pants.

Calls for Government Intervention

Described by friends as an experienced adventurer who had spent over a year preparing for the trek, Yap's prolonged silence is considered highly unusual. Relatives and friends are appealing to the Australian government to collaborate with Peruvian officials to deploy additional search resources across the rugged region. The Australian Embassy in Peru is currently providing assistance to Yap's family as rescue operations continue.
