Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Awarded £302,000 Over Early Surrender of Royal Lodge Lease

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has received £302,000 ($572,000) in compensation from the Crown Estate following the termination of his lease at Royal Lodge. The payment was issued after the former prince was forced to vacate the 30-room stately home on the Windsor Estate prior to the completion of the initial 25 years of his agreement.

Lease Terms and Compensation Details

The Crown Estate, an independent entity created by the UK Parliament to manage property assets nominally owned by the monarch for the benefit of taxpayers, confirmed on Friday that Mr Mountbatten-Windsor was eligible for the payout. Under the 75-year lease signed in 2003, he made an initial £1 million payment and was required to spend £7.5 million on property renovations.

The terms of the original agreement provided that should Mr Mountbatten-Windsor surrender the property within the first 25 years, he would be entitled to compensation for the money spent on property renovations. Even after receiving the £302,000 reimbursement, Mr Mountbatten-Windsor has paid a net total of £1.5 million to the Crown Estate over the duration of his tenancy.

Background and Future Use of Royal Lodge

King Charles III requested his younger brother to relinquish his long-time home near Windsor Castle last year to distance the royal family from the public controversy surrounding Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s link to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. King Charles also stripped him of his princely title. The 66-year-old previously relinquished his position as a trade envoy in 2011 and withdrew from royal duties in 2019.

Following his departure from Royal Lodge in February, Mr Mountbatten-Windsor relocated to a residence on the Sandringham Estate in eastern England, which is private property owned by the King. The Crown Estate stated that the lease for Royal Lodge has officially concluded and that it is evaluating future uses for the property to maximize financial return for the country.
