Ukrainian Frontline Operations Affected by Unannounced Starlink Speed Limits

Unannounced speed restrictions placed on the Starlink satellite communications network have disrupted Ukrainian military operations along the front line, according to officials in Kyiv. Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that SpaceX introduced a speed limit of 100 mph (160 km/h) on Starlink terminals overnight without prior notification to Ukrainian forces.

A source within Ukraine's defense ministry confirmed the restrictions, explaining that terminals lose their connection whenever a vehicle or military asset exceeds the 160 km/h threshold. The defense ministry noted that the limitation has hindered drone operations, particularly middle-strike drones and interceptors used to shoot down Russian jet-propelled drones, while also degrading reconnaissance, front-line logistics, and signal relaying capabilities. Authorities are currently investigating the root cause of the connectivity issue, while SpaceX has not publicly commented on the matter.

Massive Russian Energy Strikes Cause Blackouts

The communication disruptions occurred alongside widespread Russian missile and drone attacks targeting Ukrainian infrastructure. President Zelensky reported that at least 600,000 people across the country were left without electricity after strikes hit critical energy facilities in Kyiv, the surrounding capital region, and Kharkiv. Local officials confirmed three fatalities in Kyiv following the overnight bombardment.

Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched 39 ballistic and cruise missiles alongside 128 drones overnight. Air defense systems downed four missiles and 115 drones. Over the past two nights, ballistic missiles hit targets in Kyiv before air raid sirens could be activated. Ukraine relies on U.S. satellite systems to track missile launches and issue warnings. Meanwhile, Russia's defense ministry stated its strikes targeted Ukrainian military communications and energy facilities, while also claiming its forces shot down 902 Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions, including Moscow and Crimea.

Diplomatic Tensions and Ceasefire Disputes

The recent strikes follow claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine was in effect. Zelensky stated that six Ukrainian energy sites have been struck by Russia since the announced agreement. Zelensky noted Ukraine's willingness to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure if Moscow reciprocates, but mentioned that Washington had threatened to restrict intelligence sharing if Kyiv did not agree to the ceasefire terms—a claim President Trump denied.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected the idea of a truce, stating Ukraine did not deserve a respite that would allow European nations to resupply it with weaponry. The escalation comes as President Zelensky prepared to meet UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham in London to discuss accelerating the supply of air defense systems to Ukraine.
