Ukrainian Drone Strikes Force Yandex to Suspend Operations at Vladimir Data Centre

Russian technology company Yandex has temporarily halted operations at a data centre near Moscow following a Ukrainian drone strike. The incident at the facility in Vladimir, located east of the Russian capital, marks the third attack targeting the company's infrastructure in a single week. Yandex confirmed that no injuries were reported from the Vladimir site, though several of its digital services experienced disruptions.

Impact on Digital Infrastructure

The strike on the Vladimir facility follows previous attacks on Yandex data centres in Sasovo on Thursday and Kaluga on Friday. The company, which operates five data centres in total and provides widely used services including an artificial intelligence chatbot, smart home device support, and food-delivery and taxi-hailing applications, acknowledged that operations at the Vladimir location were completely suspended. Yandex stated it is actively working to restore connectivity, though it noted earlier in the week that predicting full recovery times remains difficult.

Strategic Context and Ongoing Conflict

Ukrainian officials indicated that the strikes aim to disrupt revenue streams supporting Moscow's military efforts and compel Russia to divert resources toward infrastructure repairs. The escalation coincides with broader long-range targeting by both nations as the conflict enters its fifth year since Russia's full-scale invasion. Russian strikes have similarly targeted Ukrainian data centres throughout the conflict, prompting internet outages and forcing some Ukrainian businesses to relocate servers internationally.

The latest strike occurred alongside reported military activity elsewhere. Ukrainian emergency services reported six injuries from Russian attacks overnight across four districts in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Local officials also confirmed that Russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia on Saturday resulted in at least 20 deaths, including four children. Furthermore, the incident follows remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump urging Ukraine to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries to facilitate global diesel supply releases, which triggered diplomatic pushback from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and criticism across Europe.
