South Africa Police Investigate Discovery of 12 Women Killed in Ekurhuleni

South African law enforcement authorities are investigating the deaths of 12 women whose bodies were discovered over a two-month period in Ekurhuleni, an area east of Johannesburg. The latest three discoveries occurred between Saturday and Monday morning, heightening public concern across the region, particularly around Kempton Park.

Police have made arrests in three separate cases, though investigators state these incidents do not appear connected to one another. However, officials noted they cannot rule out the possibility that a serial killer may be responsible for some of the remaining deaths. A dedicated task team has been established to investigate the killings, and authorities have offered a reward of 400,000 rand for information leading to arrests.

Timeline of Recoveries and Suspects

The string of discoveries began on July 15, 2026, when the body of 37-year-old Busisiwe Mahlangu was found bound and naked in Kempton Park. Two days later, police arrested her partner, who remains in custody and has not been connected to subsequent deaths. On August 3, the body of 32-year-old Itumeleng Kekana was recovered from a bridge in the same area, followed by Nomfesane Mjobo on August 26.

In September, additional victims were found across Ekurhuleni, including an unidentified woman in Olifantsfontein on September 7, 28-year-old Gracious Nkomo near the airport on September 10, and 38-year-old Elizabeth Moselakgomo on September 12 following a public search. Further discoveries included an unidentified woman in Olifantsfontein on September 14, 38-year-old Dineo Motapane in Springs on September 15, and Jabulile Ntimba in Boksburg on September 17. Two women were charged with premeditated murder in connection with Ntimba's death, which police suspect involved a personal dispute.

On September 26, Ntombifuthi Nxumalo was found dead in a Tembisa cemetery; a 36-year-old man was later apprehended in another province and charged with her murder. Over the past weekend, a patrolling security company located an unidentified woman in a Springs field. On Monday, 23-year-old Boitumelo Gift Mashita was shot dead in Tembisa while heading to work; her estranged husband, suspected in her shooting, was later found dead in Midrand. Separately, police located another woman's body in a Soweto dam on September 20, though any connection to the Ekurhuleni cases remains unconfirmed.

National Impact and Gender-Based Violence

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the killings, describing the violence against women as a stain on the nation's conscience. According to the South African Human Rights Commission, 569 women were killed in the country between April and June this year, averaging roughly six female homicide victims per day. Overall murder figures from official police data reported 5,427 total homicides during that same quarterly timeframe.
