Russia Releases Imprisoned US Citizen Stephen Hubbard Following Diplomatic Talks

Russia has released Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old American citizen who was imprisoned in 2024 after being accused of fighting on behalf of Ukraine. The release occurred as US envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg for diplomatic discussions.

Putin stated that Hubbard was taken to Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg early Wednesday. US President Donald Trump announced that the former teacher from Michigan was returning home, adding that no prisoner swap was necessary to secure his freedom. Trump stated that the release followed a direct request he made to Putin the previous week and defended his decision to suspend select sanctions on Russia, claiming negotiations would have stalled otherwise.

Detention and Health Treatment

Hubbard was captured in 2022 shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and subsequently sentenced to nearly seven years in a penal colony. Russian prosecutors alleged he joined a Ukrainian military unit and received weapons training, though his family questioned these claims due to his age and lack of military interest. The US State Department had formally classified Hubbard as wrongfully detained. Following his release, reports indicate Hubbard is expected to travel to Texas to receive medical treatment for health issues.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed American officials had repeatedly requested Hubbard's release, stating that Putin decided to free him on humanitarian grounds. Hubbard's son, Joseph Coleman, characterized his father's release as a gift of mercy rather than a political victory.

Diplomatic Meetings and Bilateral Topics

The release coincided with a three-hour meeting in St. Petersburg between Witkoff and Putin. Witkoff arrived following discussions in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where proposals were discussed regarding potential peace frameworks and trilateral talks to end the conflict. Russian state media reported that Witkoff presented documents outlining approaches to the peace process, though Putin has not publicly indicated whether any proposals are acceptable.

The St. Petersburg discussions also encompassed broader economic and international issues. Witkoff expressed gratitude for a recent agreement for the US to import Russian diesel, with Putin noting the initial shipment would depart Russia shortly. Additional topics included economic cooperation, prospective fertilizer exports to the United States, the situation involving Iran, and a potential future meeting in China.
