Pope Leo XIV Returns to Vatican Following Lung Cancer Surgery
Pope Leo XIV has been discharged from Rome's Gemelli Hospital and returned to the Vatican on Saturday, four days after undergoing surgery for lung cancer. The 71-year-old pontiff walked unaided to his vehicle and paused to speak with well-wishers outside the facility on Saturday afternoon.
Medical professionals cleared the pope for discharge following the evaluation of his latest blood test results and chest imaging. On Tuesday, Pope Leo underwent an operation to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. His lead surgeon, Stefano Margaritora, noted that the procedure was completed successfully without complications.
Medical Outlook and Public Return
Doctors have confirmed that Pope Leo has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, which is the most common form of lung cancer. While the surgery was successful, medical staff have not yet disclosed the size of the removed tumour or whether the cancer had spread to adjacent lymph nodes, factors that remain critical in assessing his long-term prognosis.
The diagnosis generated widespread surprise following the pope's election in May 2025, prompting discussions regarding the future management of his papacy during his treatment. Outside the hospital, priests and faithful gathered to pray the Rosary near a statue of the late Pope John Paul II ahead of the pontiff's departure.
Pope Leo is scheduled to hold his first public engagement since the operation on Sunday, when he will lead the weekly prayers for pilgrims assembled in St. Peter's Square.
