NSW Government Scraps Proposed Sydney and South Coast Train Timetable Changes
The New South Wales government has canceled planned train timetable alterations for southern Sydney and the Illawarra region following opposition from local residents and politicians. The adjustments, which were scheduled to take effect on November 15 across the T4, T8, and South Coast lines, will no longer proceed, leaving the existing schedule in place.
Commuter Concerns Drive Government Reversal
The proposed schedule was originally intended to increase service frequency and passenger capacity. However, the plan drew criticism because certain journeys would have taken longer. NSW Premier Chris Minns announced the decision on Saturday, stating that the administration chose not to proceed after reviewing feedback from passengers and local members of parliament. Minns emphasized that the government's primary focus remains on improving network reliability.
Transport Minister John Graham confirmed the shift in strategy, explaining that the government decided to prioritize network stability over the planned modifications while continuing consultations with local communities regarding potential future service updates.
Key Route Alterations Cancelled
The discarded strategy aimed to separate the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line from the South Coast Line to minimize track sharing and reduce cascading delays caused by incidents at locations such as Bondi Junction. However, specific operational adjustments generated significant public dissatisfaction.
Under the proposed changes, South Coast services from Wollongong would have bypassed Wolli Creek, removing direct connections to Sydney Airport. Commuters would have been required to transfer at Sutherland or Hurstville before connecting at Wolli Creek, or travel north to Central Station to board an airport-bound service.
Additionally, T8 line trains were set to bypass Sydenham station, requiring commuters from south-western suburbs to make an extra transfer to access the Metro. Passengers on this line would have also lost direct peak-hour access to Redfern, Erskineville, and St Peters stations.
