Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Legend Known as the 'King of the World', Dies at 91

Slinger Francisco, the iconic Trinidadian performer known globally as the Mighty Sparrow, has died at the age of 91. According to a statement from his family, the musician passed away peacefully surrounded by relatives in New York on Sunday following a brief illness.

Widely recognized as the "calypso king of the world," Francisco enjoyed a career that spanned six decades. His family described him as an institution within the entertainment industry who was admired for his talent as a singer, songwriter, and mentor. The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation also paid tribute, calling him a master storyteller and a cultural figure whose work helped bring Trinidad and Tobago's native genre to an international audience.

Early Life and Rise to Fame

Born in July 1935 in the coastal town of Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco moved with his parents to Trinidad and Tobago as a toddler in 1937. It was in Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of calypso, that he developed his artistic identity as the Mighty Sparrow, as well as the affectionate nickname "Birdie."

He achieved his major musical breakthrough in 1956 with the hit song "Jean and Dinah." Over his long career, Francisco recorded hundreds of tracks and released numerous famous calypso songs, including "Both of Them," "Congo Man," "Mr. Walker," and "The Lizard." His performances reached worldwide audiences, including major venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Cultural Legacy and Honors

Throughout his life, Francisco worked continuously to elevate the status of calypso music. Trinidadian cultural historian and author Dr. Rudolph Ottley praised him as a supreme entertainer and cultural revolutionary, calling him one of the world's greatest calypsonians.

In recognition of his significant achievements, Francisco received national honors from Trinidad and Tobago. Additionally, the University of the West Indies awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters in 1987.
