Michigan Credit Union CEO Departs Following Backlash Over AI-Edited Photo

The chief executive officer of a Michigan credit union is no longer employed at the institution following widespread public backlash over a social media post featuring an AI-generated image of her family. Jane Smith, who served as CEO of Saginaw-based Family First Credit Union, posted an edited photograph on September 11 showing her family wearing sweaters displaying the words "Lake America."

Family First Credit Union announced the departure in a statement on social media, confirming that Smith was no longer employed with immediate effect and naming Jason Acosta as her interim successor. The organization also issued an apology to its members and the broader community for the concern, disappointment, and pain caused by the situation.

Social Media Post Sparks Canadian Backlash

The controversy began after Smith edited a family photograph taken at Detroit airport prior to traveling to Halifax, Canada. Using ChatGPT, she altered the sweaters in the image to read "Lake America"—a term derived from an order issued by Donald Trump directing US federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario by that name amid a trade war with Canada.

Smith published the image to Facebook on September 11 with the caption, "Like our sweatshirts? Not sure Canada will," followed by "Lol lol." Online users, particularly in Canada, criticized the post as disrespectful. Critics pointed out that the timing was insensitive given Halifax's historic role in welcoming thousands of diverted airplane passengers when American airspace was shut down on September 11, 2001. The post has since been deleted.

Apology and Administrative Response

Speaking to Detroit television news station WJRT, Smith expressed regret over the post, characterizing it as a result of poor judgment rather than a political statement. She stated that the intent was to poke fun at the renaming of the lake, but acknowledged how the post could be perceived as highly offensive by residents in Halifax and stated she understood their anger.

Following an internal review of the situation, Family First Credit Union decided to part ways with the chief executive. The financial institution noted that its decision was made to act in the best interest of the credit union, uphold member trust, and focus on the community.

Context of the Naming Controversy

The incident unfolded against the backdrop of political friction surrounding the designation of Lake Ontario. Trump's directive instructed US federal agencies to use the name "Lake America," though the order carries no legal authority to alter the name of the Canadian portion of the body of water or force international mapmakers and legal bodies to adopt the change.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the name change on social media, noting that the name Lake Ontario originates from the Indigenous Wendat language and predates the founding of both Canada and the United States. Furthermore, several US governors in the Great Lakes region dismissed the directive. Lake Ontario borders New York state and does not border Michigan.
