Ferrari Unveils Schumacher Tribute Livery as Antonelli Faces Grid Penalty at Monza

Ferrari has revealed a special one-off livery for the upcoming Italian Grand Prix at Monza to honor seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher. The tribute coincides with milestone anniversaries for the team, marking 30 years since the German legend joined the Scuderia and 20 years since his final F1 victory at the 2006 Chinese Grand Prix. Meanwhile, current championship leader Kimi Antonelli faces a major challenge at his home race, as Mercedes has confirmed he will serve a grid penalty following a power unit component change.

Ferrari Honors Schumacher's Historic Legacy at Monza

The unique Monza livery designed for drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton celebrates Schumacher's transformative era with Ferrari. After joining the team, Schumacher helped end a 16-year constructors' championship drought in 1999 before securing the 2000 drivers' title—Ferrari's first since Jody Scheckter in 1979. Schumacher went on to claim five consecutive world championships with the Scuderia between 2000 and 2004, including five victories at Monza.

As part of the tribute, the cars feature seven stars on the nose cone to represent Schumacher's world titles. Drivers Leclerc and Hamilton will also wear customized racing suits adorned with the seven stars and Schumacher's personal logo.

Championship Leader Antonelli Set for Engine Penalty

In the championship battle, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli enters his home grand prix holding a 59-point lead over his closest rivals. However, the youngest driver to ever lead the F1 standings will start near the back of the grid after exceeding his seasonal power unit component allocation. Mercedes previously suffered engine reliability issues this season, including a retirement for Antonelli in Barcelona and failures for teammate George Russell in Canada and Belgium.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff explained that Monza's high-speed layout offers the optimal strategic opportunity for overtaking and serving the penalty, prioritizing the broader title fight over local publicity. Historical precedents at the circuit support the decision; drivers such as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have previously carved through the field from penalized starting positions, while Pierre Gasly and Isack Hadjar achieved strong points finishes from deep on the grid.
