Australia's Wallaroos Seek Further Progress After 56-12 Win Over Scotland
The Australian women's national rugby team, the Wallaroos, secured a decisive 56-12 victory over Scotland in their Global XV Series Test, scoring eight tries to two. Despite the lopsided scoreline, team leadership emphasized that the performance fell short of a complete display as they focus on long-term squad development.
The win marks Australia's second consecutive victory against Scotland, following a 30-10 result in Edinburgh three weeks prior during a three-Test tour of Great Britain and France. That earlier match ended a six-game losing streak for the seventh-ranked Wallaroos, though the team remained unsatisfied with their overall execution.
Captains and Coaches Target Technical Improvements
Wallaroos captain Siokapesi Palu Sekona highlighted several areas requiring refinement ahead of future fixtures. Palu Sekona noted that while public attention often focuses on final scores, the team must address fundamental technical elements, including discipline, ruck control, and set-piece accuracy. She stated that the squad is aiming higher than merely becoming better versions of their past selves as they build toward the 2029 Women's Rugby World Cup in Australia.
Among individual performances, winger Amelia Whitaker crossed the line twice to score a double during the eight-try display. Tim Walsh, Rugby Australia's director of women's high performance who is currently overseeing a interim coaching setup, described the match as another positive step forward while acknowledging that further progress is needed.
Transition to Professionalism and Season Finale
The Wallaroos currently operate as a semi-professional program, contrasting with fully professional setups in top-ranked nations such as England and New Zealand. However, plans are underway to transition the Australian squad to full-time status through an integrated structure alongside the national women's sevens program.
Coaching responsibilities will shift next year when Sione Fukofuka assumes the head coach role, working in tandem with Walsh. The Wallaroos are scheduled to conclude their 2026 Test season with a rematch against Scotland on Friday night in Canberra.
