Australian Hiker Jordan Yap Found Dead After Going Missing in Peru
An Australian trekker who went missing while navigating a remote mountain trail in South America has been found dead, according to a statement from his family and friends. Jordan Yap, a 30-year-old experienced hiker from Melbourne, had been unaccounted for after setting off on a solo trek along Peru’s Huayhuash mountain range.
Yap last communicated with his loved ones on September 14, prior to embarking on an intended 10-day journey across the Cordillera Huayhuash circuit. The remote route, located roughly 400 kilometers northeast of the capital city of Lima, is known as a demanding, high-altitude trek through the Andes mountains. Concern grew after Yap failed to check back into the Krusty hostel in Huaraz, missed his scheduled flight from Lima to Cusco, and did not make contact on his expected return date.
Family Pays Tribute Following Search Efforts
In a social media update published on Saturday, Yap's family and friends confirmed his death and expressed gratitude to those involved in the search operations. The message acknowledged the contributions of search teams, local police, various engaged organizations, and members of the public who shared information online to assist in locating him.
An additional factor raising concern prior to his disappearance was that Yap had lost his satellite beacon days before starting the 120-kilometer trek. In their statement, his family requested that Yap be remembered for his vibrant personality and the joy he brought to others. Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted regarding the incident.
