Australian Defence Force Pauses Supacat Vehicle Operations After Fatal NT Crash

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has temporarily suspended the operation of Supacat troop carriers following a fatal training accident in the Northern Territory that resulted in the death of Army Corporal Brendan Hannam.

Corporal Hannam was killed on Monday when the vehicle overturned during an exercise at the Mount Bundey Training Area, located south of Darwin. Five additional soldiers sustained injuries in the rollover. Two of the injured personnel remain hospitalized at Royal Darwin Hospital, while two others have been discharged and returned to Robertson Barracks in Darwin.

Standard Safety Pause Implemented

Chief of Army Lieutenant General Susan Coyle confirmed the vehicle involved was a Supacat troop carrying vehicle. Speaking to reporters in Perth, General Coyle stated that the vehicle model is currently utilized by the 1st Brigade as well as Australian special forces units.

General Coyle noted that there had been no prior recorded incidents involving the Supacat vehicle. She emphasized that halting the use of the vehicle fleet represents standard operational procedure following major accidents, particularly those involving a fatality.

Investigation and Support Efforts

Official details confirm that Corporal Hannam was not driving the vehicle at the time of the rollover. General Coyle indicated that Corporal Hannam's unit is actively supporting his family, and she plans to visit the family in person shortly.
