African Serval Rescued from Unpermitted Enclosure During Louisiana House Fire

Firefighters responding to a minor house fire in Marrero, Louisiana, discovered an illegally kept African serval in the backyard of the residence. The wildcat, native to sub-Saharan Africa, was found housed in a small chain-link cage behind the home, leading local animal welfare authorities to intervene and relocate the animal.

Illegal Exotic Pet Discovered in Marrero

Officials from Jefferson Protection and Animal Welfare Services (JPAWS) were summoned to the scene on Tuesday after firefighters spotted the exotic feline in a 9ft-by-9ft enclosure. John McCusker, a spokesperson for JPAWS, stated that local Marrero regulations require an exotic animal permit to keep a serval as a pet. The homeowner did not possess the required documentation.

JPAWS Director Michelle Brignac and Humane Department Supervisor Victoria Clark secured the hissing serval and placed it into a transport carrier. The animal was then moved to the JPAWS facility in nearby Harvey, where it was temporarily provided an entire room to itself while staff searched for a suitable permanent home.

Relocation and Care Requirements

Servals are agile wildcats known for their black spots, slender physiques, and the ability to leap up to 7 feet in the air. While born in captivity, the Marrero wildcat's species naturally inhabits African grasslands. On Friday, Brignac announced via social media that JPAWS successfully transferred the serval to an undisclosed zoo equipped to provide specialized care, adequate space, and environmental enrichment.

Animal welfare officials emphasized that servals are ill-suited for domestic life. According to JPAWS, keeping servals in cramped captive conditions leads to chronic stress. As they mature, servals often become aggressive, mark territory, destroy furniture, and require specialized diets and care that typical pet owners cannot adequately provide.
