Trial Begins in Mexico for Three Accused of Murdering Foreign Surfers in Baja California

The trial of three men accused of murdering two Australian brothers and an American friend has commenced in Ensenada, Mexico. The killings occurred in April 2024 during an alleged robbery along a remote stretch of Baja California's Pacific coast.

Brothers Jake Robinson, 30, and Callum Robinson, 33, along with 30-year-old American Jack Carter Rhoad, were on a surfing trip when they were fatally shot in the head. Their bodies were later discovered dumped inside a cliff-top shaft, while their burned pickup truck was recovered nearby. Prosecutors allege the three victims were targeted by the defendants during an attempt to steal their vehicle.

Courtroom Testimony and Witness Accounts

The parents of the Australian victims, Martin and Debra Robinson, traveled to the port city of Ensenada to attend the opening of the legal proceedings. Prior to the trial, Martin Robinson expressed the family's desire to seek answers regarding the circumstances and motive behind the violent attack.

During the first day of court proceedings, three witnesses delivered testimony. Among them was the stepson of one of the accused men, who testified from a separate room with his face hidden. Describing his stepfather as violent, the stepson recounted accompanying the defendants toward the location of the incident and remaining nearby when he heard a commotion and substantial noise.

The witness stated that he initially fled the immediate area before rejoining the group when called. He told the court that the suspects threatened him against speaking out, warning him that he would suffer the same fate as the victims.

The disappearances and subsequent deaths of the three men triggered widespread concern and coordinated social media search efforts across Australia and the United States. Prior to the incident, Callum Robinson was a professional lacrosse player in the U.S., Jake Robinson was pursuing a career in medicine, and Jack Carter Rhoad was engaged to be married later that year.

Baja California remains one of Mexico's most violent states due to organized crime and drug cartel presence, though violence rarely impacts foreign tourists. However, previous violent incidents targeting international travelers have occurred along the country's Pacific region, including the 2015 murders of Australian surfers Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman in Sinaloa state.
