Russia Denies Leipzig Airport Drone Attack and Condemns German Security Measures

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has characterized Germany's accusations regarding Moscow's involvement in a recent drone incident at Leipzig Airport as "by and large, the start of a real war." His comments, reported by state news agency TASS, follow the German government's official conclusion on September 1 that Russia was responsible for the alleged attack. Russia has consistently denied any involvement in the incident and accused Berlin of planting evidence to frame it, rejecting broader allegations of conducting operations across Western Europe.

Addressing the situation, Lavrov referenced statements by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about establishing Germany as Europe's leading military power, claiming those plans are now being implemented. Chancellor Merz stated that the government's attribution of the attack to Russia was "clear and legally sound," warning Moscow against continuing hybrid warfare. Merz noted that the incident signifies a "profound rupture" for Germany, with long-term consequences that will unfold over time.

Germany Enhances Anti-Sabotage Countermeasures

In response to the alleged attack, Germany ordered several measures, including the closure of a Russian consulate and a Russian cultural centre in Berlin. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that Russian hybrid attacks have become part of daily reality, announcing plans to implement a national anti-sabotage shield known as a "cyberdome." This initiative involves a network of digital sensors aimed at detecting and intercepting hacking attempts.

According to a military spokesperson, Germany will expand police mobile drone defense capabilities, deploying rapid counter-drone units in cities to secure critical transport hubs and government districts. Additionally, operators of critical infrastructure, such as power utilities and defense manufacturers, will receive legal authority to actively fend off unauthorized drones. The government also plans to increase the use of AI-supported technologies, biometric facial recognition, and video surveillance to identify potential saboteurs.

NATO Ally Support

U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker emphasized that NATO allies must not tolerate deliberate hybrid warfare actions. Speaking in Italy, Whitaker noted that the Leipzig incident was particularly concerning compared to previous instances of stray Russian drones targeting Ukraine. He highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure, including energy assets, urging national authorities to maintain close monitoring while confirming U.S. support for affected nations.
