Former Newcastle player Matty Johns broke down in tears following the Newcastle Knights' victory over the Penrith Panthers in the NRL preliminary final, securing the club's first grand final appearance in 25 years. The Knights will now face the Sydney Roosters in the decider on Sunday, October 4.

Newcastle earned their place in the grand final despite playing more than half of the match with only 12 players. Phoenix Crossland was sent off for a hip-drop tackle that resulted in a broken leg for Penrith's Nathan Cleary. Although the Panthers scored shortly after to lead 14-6 at half-time, coach Justin Holbrook's side produced a resilient defensive effort and scored three second-half tries to secure a 22-14 victory.

Emotional Response to Historic Achievement

The result marks Newcastle's return to the men's grand final for the first time since Andrew Johns led the team to a premiership win against the Parramatta Eels in 2001. In the intervening quarter-century, the club endured five wooden spoons, including a last-place finish previous season. While the Newcastle women's team achieved back-to-back NRLW premierships in 2022 and 2023, the men's team had experienced a long drought on the grand final stage.

Speaking on Fox Sports immediately after the match, an emotional Matty Johns praised the performance and paid tribute to the Newcastle faithful. He highlighted the incredible second-half effort and credited the supporters who stood by the team through difficult years.

Knights supporters traveled in large numbers to Homebush despite significant travel disruptions caused by a freight train issue on the Central Coast and Newcastle line. The situation led to train delays and cancellations, forcing fans onto replacement services and causing heavy traffic on the M1 motorway during wet weather.

Coach Justin Holbrook and captain Kalyn Ponga both acknowledged the impact of the crowd at the stadium. Holbrook noted that the vocal support from the estimated 30,000 fans lifted the team after they were reduced to 12 men. Ponga added that the passion of the fan base played a crucial role in pushing the side over the line, emphasizing that their support would be vital for the upcoming grand final against the Roosters.
